SubyDude short throw shifter - 05 Legacy GT

So, after reading conflicting things about Impreza short shifters in the Legacy GT, I decided to say what the hell, and got the SubyDude short throw shifter.

After further reseach (yeah, smart to do after it was shipped ) it sounds like the Legacy shifter changed mid year slightly, and the ball on the end of the shifter was reduced to be the same size as the Impreza shifters. Luckily, I had the newer stock shifter, so I went ahead with the install.

The tricky part of the Legacy install is, once you are to this point, there is an internal snap right that needs to be unseated before the cup around the ball comes out. I bought a $5 snap ring wrench from Kragen, that got the job done but with a little swearing. I should have gotten the $10 one instead. Oh well.

Push the bearing out of the fulcrum point on the stock one:

Then push the plastic caps out, insert them into the SD STS, then put the metal bearing into the plastic caps.

Everything back together again:

So far my initial impressions are good. This specific STS allows you to adjust between stock throw and 65% shorter throw. I had it set at stock throw (with the shorter height) and it felt okay. Definitely stronger, but without the shorter throw, it felt kinda wierd. So, I adjusted it to about 1/2 to 2/3 of the full shortening setting, and then the throw started feeling much better. Unfortunately, it looks like I won't be able to shorten the throw much more, unless I shave down the corner of sheet metal in the upper left corner of the shift surround.

With the shorter throw, the shifter feels pretty damn good. Really notchy and responsive. To me, the shifter always felt unnecessiarly long, like in the old trucks I used to drive. Now, the feel is much better. So, $89 bucks, for a single adjustable short throw shifter, not a bad deal at all. I'm certainly happy with it.

I'll be taking a short road trip this weekend, so I'll see how this thing holds up on a long road trip.
